AI this week: Claude Haiku 5.5, Mistral Large 4, and computers built for local AI
Anthropic refreshes its smallest model, Europe gets its strongest model yet, and Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia sell machines that run AI on your desk.
October 16, 2026 · By Bohol AI
Anthropic finished refreshing its model family, Europe released its strongest model, and running AI on your own computer got more practical.
Claude Haiku 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, replacing the year-old Haiku 4.5 as its fastest, cheapest model. Independent tests show a marked improvement, though its price rose steeply. Two weeks earlier Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, which nearly matches Opus 5.5 on independent benchmarks, but only at a reasoning setting that uses more tokens per task than any other model tested.
Mistral Large 4
Mistral opened preview access to Mistral Large 4, the most capable model released by a European company so far. It performs about as well as GPT-6 Luna, trails cheaper Chinese open models, beats all U.S.-made open models, and leads every model at finding and fixing one class of software vulnerability.
Computers for local AI
Apple upgraded the Mac mini and Mac Studio, Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, and Nvidia announced a 64 GB DGX Spark. All are pitched at running and fine-tuning capable open models on the machine itself, as an alternative or complement to the cloud.
Research: choosing training data without guesswork
Researchers at Tsinghua University, Ant Group and Renmin University built CausalMix, which separates the effect of a dataset’s topic mix from the quality of its individual examples, cutting expensive trial and error when fine-tuning.
What it means for Bohol
- Local AI keeps your data on your own machine and keeps working when the internet connection drops, both useful in Bohol.
- Cheap models aren’t always cheap: check the price per finished task, which this week went up for the smallest Claude model.
